Student Journey  |  JULY

Read all about L.P.’s journey towards her dream school, University of Oxford

INITIAL CONSULTATIONS

Like several of our students, L.P. began her college application journey with us by starting with standardized testing preparation. Her diagnostic test indicated that she needed some help with Mathematical concepts.

After meeting her teacher for a trial class, she settled on a four hour plan to brush up her concepts and fine tune her strategies. L.P. was fairly adept at the SAT already, and our advisors felt that she only needed a little bit of fine tuning before we could send her on her way.

Despite her relatively small test preparation program, L.P. made good use of the homework sessions and practice tests available to her.

The result was a near perfect score on the SAT. Armed with her impressive SATs, and encouraged by a positive experience with her Math tutor, L.P. asked if she could meet with us to discuss her admissions chances to top UK and US schools.

Shiv’s dream school had been Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania for a long time. His penchant for business pervaded from his academic choices in school, through to his extracurricular activities - his clubs, summer school programs, and internships all supported this strong academic and professional interest.

U.k. UNIVERSITY ADMISSIONS CONSULTING

One of our Client Advisors assessed her profile and suggested that even though she had competitive grades and test scores, her extracurricular profile needed some more work.

To stand out in the competitive hotbed of applications from Singapore, she knew that she had to bolster her profile, whilst also learning to highlight all that she had learned from the extracurriculars that she had committed to over the years. She chose to work with us on her applications to both the US and the UK, and made it very clear to us that going to Oxbridge had always been her dream - her aims coming into the program were clear, and with the grades to support her lofty goals, we maneuvered to best support her.

Early on, our senior UK consultant, an Oxbridge graduate himself, worked on understanding the particular course that L.P. would be applying for. When she first came to us, she wanted to study Law. We decided to work on course selection regardless, just to make sure if she truly had her heart set on Law, and whether she would pose a good fit for the course at Oxford.

“My consultant was very helpful and knowledgeable, providing guidance to enrich my Capstone experience while also making sure I stayed on track. My Capstone experience allowed me to accomplish far more than I would have been able to do on my own.”

Ultimately, the insights learned from creating and managing the project, were key to H.X kickstarting her application a process – a journey that was yet to come.

WORKING TO HER STRENGTHS

After intensive exploration, L.P. began to understand that her strengths, and professional interests were much more aligned with the political sciences, and together we narrowed down a (very) shortlist included PPE at Oxford, and HSPS at Cambridge.

Interrogating her motivations for both, as well as her future professional aims, she settled on the former, and began strategically aligning her super curricular activities with the academic rhetoric of Oxford’s PPE course. Furthermore, she chose to prepare for her interviews with us early on, which allowed us to integrate the support of mentors, alumni of Oxford, very early on, and continued to draw on their experience throughout L.P.’s process.

As a result, her entire application was geared towards highlighting her strengths, whilst also guiding her interviewers to certain interview topics that she was well prepared for.

“My consultant was very helpful in helping me strategize the content I include in each essay to ensure that each school is able to see multiple areas I have shown interest or grown in. He was also very helpful and responded very promptly with feedback. The consulting program definitely helped me to get into my first-choice university.”

It came as no surprise to us to hear that come this Fall, S.L. will be reading PPE at Oxford!
