The Oxbridge Interview: Tips and Tricks

What are Oxbridge Interviews?

For students applying to Oxbridge, the interview often becomes a major concern. An opportunity to impress academics and potential future tutors, the interview is a crucial factor in the admissions process. For undergraduates, these interviews take place through the individual colleges rather than departments, but they involve speaking to faculty members.

After reviewing all the applications, some will be cut immediately whereas others will be offered interviews. Oxford is more selective with interviews than Cambridge; the latter offers them more freely to applicants. Regardless, if you have an interview, or multiple, to look forward to, then you’ve reached the next stage. What now?

What Are They Looking For?

Oxbridge tutors are looking for keen critical thinkers and advanced learners during the interview, which is designed to scope out students’ thought processes. It helps, as well, to be knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the subject of your interest, and articulate in voicing your thoughts.

Remember, many of the people offered interviews have strong grades and exam scores too. The interview is where you set yourself apart, and secure a space for yourself at your dream school

IvyPrep’s Oxbridge Interview Tips

Building a Knowledge Base

Delve deeper into your subject of study. Read about current advancements, and about the history of your field. Take a peek at available syllabi published by your chosen department, and begin to familiarize yourself with the content. The more you know, the more you will develop the readiness and ease in answering questions from renowned academics.

Getting Comfortable with Intellectual Discussion

Like everything else, the ability to engage intellectually is a muscle you can train. It’s advisable to become more accustomed to having high-level discussions about your subjects of interest. There are many ways to practice this, like taking time to speak to your teachers about specific topics, or joining interest groups, societies, or clubs at school, where you can undertake these discussions with your peers.

Working on your Articulation

It’s important that you express your ideas clearly, so that your interviewer understands your thought process. Try presenting on a topic of choice to your family and friends. Can you explain complex ideas to a layperson? Take opportunities to speak publicly, and actively seek out feedback about how you come across.

Calming the Nerves

Finally, interviews always mean anxiety. Sometimes, your own nerves can be your worst enemy. If you follow the above tips, we hope that the confidence boost will help with your nerves. Still, make sure that you rest adequately and reassure yourself. We believe in you!
